Building Trust Through Storytelling: Discover Your Shadow

The work completed for Discover Your Shadow centred on one core challenge:
How to communicate deeply personal, introspective work in a way that feels credible, human and emotionally safe, while still performing across digital platforms.

At UNDERFOUND Studio, this became a case study in narrative-led brand communication — using film, structure and strategic distribution to build trust at scale.

Consultation and discovery

Purpose: understand the work before attempting to represent it.

The project began with a series of consultation sessions designed to fully understand:

  • The philosophy behind Discover Your Shadow

  • The emotional sensitivity of the subject matter

  • The intended audience and their likely apprehensions

  • How the founder communicates in real, unfiltered conversation

Rather than approaching this as a marketing exercise, the focus was on listening — ensuring the tone, pacing and language of the final output would feel authentic rather than performative.

Deliverable: a clear narrative brief outlining tone, boundaries and objectives.

Fact finding and narrative planning

Purpose: shape a story that informs without oversharing.

We initially carried out a narrative fact-finding phase, identifying:

  • Key themes that needed to be communicated clearly

  • Areas that required sensitivity and restraint

  • Common misconceptions that could be gently addressed

  • Emotional beats that would help audiences feel grounded, not overwhelmed

This allowed us to design a film structure that balanced depth with accessibility, avoiding jargon while still respecting the complexity of the work.

Micro-documentary concept and structure

Purpose: create a central asset that could flex across platforms.

Rather than producing a single long-form video, the decision was made to create an in-depth micro documentary designed as a core narrative spine. This master film would then be broken down into smaller, purpose-built components.

The master documentary focused on:

  • Personal insight and lived experience

  • Clear articulation of the work and its value

  • Calm, grounded delivery rather than dramatic emphasis

  • Visual language that felt intimate, controlled and respectful

Deliverable: master documentary concept with segmentation strategy.

Production: filming with care and intention

Purpose: capture honesty without intrusion.

The filming process was designed to feel contained and psychologically safe. Creative decisions focused on:

  • Minimal crew and distraction

  • Controlled, soft lighting

  • Static, considered framing

  • Space for natural pauses and reflection

This approach ensured the subject could speak freely, resulting in material that felt genuine and unforced — critical for a brand built on trust.

Deliverable: high-quality interview and supporting footage.

Post-production and content segmentation

Purpose: maximise clarity and longevity.

Post-production focused not only on editing the master film, but on intelligent segmentation. The footage was broken down into multiple formats, including:

  • A hero micro documentary for the website

  • Short-form social clips focused on specific themes

  • Vertical edits for social and paid advertising

  • Soundbite-led cuts for educational or awareness use

Each version was paced and captioned differently, depending on context and audience attention span.

Deliverable: structured video library mapped to usage scenarios.

Website integration

Purpose: embed storytelling into the user journey.

The micro documentary was integrated directly into the website experience, acting as:

  • A trust-building introduction for first-time visitors

  • A way to communicate depth without heavy copy

  • A calm, human counterbalance to written explanations

This ensured visitors could feel the ethos of Discover Your Shadow, not just read about it.

Social media strategy and paid advertising setup

Purpose: extend reach without diluting meaning.

We supported Discover Your Shadow with:

  • Facebook ad account setup

  • Guidance on audience targeting and objectives

  • Advice on creative testing using the segmented video assets

  • Framing content for awareness vs conversion without compromising tone

The emphasis was on education-led advertising, using video to introduce concepts gently rather than pushing aggressive calls to action.
